Happy Anniversary and a Time to Remember

Happy Anniversary Mom and Dad!

Wishing my Mom and Dad a very Happy Anniversary. 47 years ago my folks were married in a small church down the road from where I grew up. Had their reception in the living room of my mom’s childhood home surrounded by friends and family. They met when they were small children because my father’s grandparents lived across the local gold mine’s access road from my mother’s parents.

My parents have pretty much known each other since birth. And I love that about their story.

Personal History
Mom and Dad 🙂 How cute are they!

I rescued the photo of them on their wedding day from my father’s childhood home. The house, just on the other side of inhabitable, still housed a few treasures – like a number of these memories. I’ve always been happy that I found them that day. Within a few months the homestead that had been standing for more than 100 years was bulldozed. But also because I didn’t remember seeing pictures of them on their wedding day.

A Time to Remember

To be completely honest I needed to look up and confirm the year of my parent’s marriage. Luckily it wasn’t that difficult. I have a wonderful printed archive of the baptisms and marriages in Harrigan Cove that my aunt put together.  The book shares the beginnings and history of the church and includes historic photos.

As the family archivist I’ve been collecting the stories of my family since I was a child. Having a copy of A Time to Remember allows me to connect with my history and I’m grateful for it. My great-grandfather on my mother’s side was one of the first baptisms in the church. He grew up working in the local mines and when he moved from home he met my great grandmother. Both he and his daughter (my grandmother) are buried in the graveyard that surrounds the church.

The book is a wonderful example of documenting the heritage of a community. Saint Mary’s Anglican Church is the only public building in all of Harrigan Cove now. Now a days we can find this information online. But someone still needs to compile all the information. The genealogists around the global are creating massive connectivity on the internet and yet there is always room for one more story, one more piece of heritage.

Blueskies,
