A family that vacation’s together…
Today I’m driving back to Atlanta from a wonderful few days in Siesta Key, Florida. We were so grateful to be able to come after such a crazy year of weather.
We have a family vacation every year. Sometimes it’s a cruise or a visit to some place exotic but regardless of the location the vacation is always about enjoying time just being together.
This togetherness was an important part of the legacy that was left to us. Honoring it isn’t always easy. Life is busy and often we have conflicting schedules. Some like the beaches and others like the ski slopes. Some want adventure and activity and others want rest and relaxation. But the common thread is spending time connecting. Being with family is a great way to solidify these meaningful relationships and friendships.
A few things that we found work great during a large family vacation
Creating space for people to have their own adventures and come back together for evening dinners.
Speaking of dinner. If you’re doing a house rental have a couple of dinners out. Reduces the stress of cooking for a lot of people with different likes and dislikes oh and the no cleanup is a real bonus. We usually let people fend for themselves at lunch.
Find a place with lots of activities for both the young and old. This is a great time for generations to come together, but it’s also a great time for cousins to connect and build their own memories.
Do a little research. If there is something you’d like to do while you’re on vacation, communicate it. Family members have taken advantage of various adventures on our vacations – including boat trips, swimming with dolphins, and hiking through ruins… A family vacation is a great time to experience the world on your own and as a group.
I look forward to our family vacations every year. It not only reminds me of the importance of family, it always makes me feel connected to the man that made it all possible. It’s a great way to honor someone who had a great love for his family.
