Being a filmmaker has taken me to a lot of places. This month it took me to Superbowl LIII!
This year’s Superbowl was hosted at the Mercedes Benz Stadium in Atlanta Georgia February 3rd, 2019. 30 years, 1 month and 10 days after I received the best Christmas present of all time – a gold San Francisco, circa Joe Montana, jacket!
Growing up an American football fan in hockey country is tough! Only small pieces of games were televised and yet somehow, even though at this time I had no idea that Star Trek were reruns, I knew who Joe Montana and Jerry Rice were – and I was obsessed.
I wore my gold jacket everyday until I graduated high school. The same year Montana was traded to Kansas City. It fits a little tighter these days, but still has the gravy stain I got the first week back to school after Christmas from my daily lunch of fries and gravy (did I mention I’m from Canada?). And while I’ve only worn it a few times since then (looking at you Super Bowl XLVII) it is the one thing that has moved everywhere with me and is hanging in the hall closet as I type. Hands off Marie Kondo; this thing brings me great joy!
What’s in your closet?
What is your gold jacket? What is that thing you’d save from a burning building? The thing that represents a time in your life that seems too complicated to share all the stories but when you look at it brings with it all the feels?
The are special things and insignificant things that are like talisman that conjure up all sorts of stories. If you’re feeling stuck, find one. Think about why you have it and why it is important to you. Ask someone about something they are holding on to. You never know what kind of adventure you’ll be taken on.
I have no words for how much the feeling of fun fills me when I see my jacket hanging in the closet. So many things it will never tell, so many stories I’ve already forgotten, people that are already gone that it evokes snapshots of moments. But it also reminded me that I had an unfulfilled goal.
Superbowl LIII
This year, I did something that every one of the teams I was rooting for couldn’t do, I made it to Superbowl. (Next year guys!)
I was part of the crew that brought Superbowl 53 to millions of viewers around the world and because of this I didn’t just go to Superbowl, I was on the field for pre-game, the game and the trophy.
Of all the places film has taken me I had no idea it would help me fulfill a lifelong dream. It’s exciting to think we are just starting the new year!
